Do You Know You?
This means defining who you are, what is important to you, and building your moral fiber as an individual. This helps you on the journey towards being the best person you want to be. It helps you shape your life journey into that which you want and not what society wants.
Defining who you are as a person
helps shapes your decisions and perceptions. It is what keeps you grounded when everything seems to crumble down. It is about your foundation and what is dear to your heart. Moreover this helps you identify your place in a world of diverse individuals. These are some questions you can ask yourself to define exactly who you are:
Where do I come from and do I identify myself with that place?
Does my family and childhood background matter a lot to me and how?
What childhood memories do I cherish the most?
If everything were to crumble down, what I wish to hold onto?
Defining what it is that is important to you
This is extremely crucial as it helps to shape your vision, plans and career path. Different people will answer this question completely different. Society does not have a unifying idea of what is important and if you do not define this for yourself, they will surely define it for you, and we do not want that. Is it money? Is it family? Is it Success? Is it impact? If money is extremely important to you, then a lot of your career choices and moral objectives will revolve around this factor and if family is important to you, it will determine a lot of your commitments and decisions especially at a young age. These are the most common answers but are by no way exhaustive. Feel free to shape your own path, if you do not like the rest. Here are some questions that you can ask yourself:
What drives me throughout my every day activities?
What do my commitments and priorities mostly revolve around?
What can I not live without?
Building Your Moral Fiber
This is the biggest takeaway from this article. We currently live in a world where morality is subjective and there is really no such thing as worldview. However, I encourage you to take a different path from that of this world. It may seem difficult but I guarantee you it will be worth it. Define what your worldview is and by worldview I mean the way in which you perceive the world, life and morality. Based on this, you can define your boundaries in all aspects of your life from as little as self presentation, relationships, and career development. From this, morality will no longer be imposed on you by society rather based on your own terms. There are many advantages of building your moral fiber and sticking by it:
i) Improves Relationships
When a girl has her set of morals, she is able to improve the quality of relationships she has with people around her; whether it’s her family members, friends, colleagues in college or work and different members of society.
ii) Builds Up Your Reputation
The world never forgets. The most important this a young girl can understand is that each one of her actions has consequences. Although a lot of young ladies may not comprehend this, having a good reputation can favor one’s journey towards attaining their goals. A good impression opens doors while a bad impression can easily close doors that draw you closer to your success.
iii) Helps People Understand You Better Although we can’t afford judgment and criticism, having our own moral values helps people understand you better in a more positive light. The boundaries you set for yourself according to your moral values also help you avoid trouble and unwholesome association.
iv) Define You Having moral values defines the kind of person you are without having to say much. This is imperative in building self respect and can also influence people around you to respect you as well.
v) Stability- having moral values give you stability to face different circumstances and occurrences in life’s journey without regressing or driven by vices that can lead us towards destructive paths.
