It is simple to think that successful entrepreneurs such as Marissa Mayer have something that the rest of us don’t. How is it possible for few people come up with ideas that revolutionize important aspects of our lives?
The answer is simple: practice. There are certain habits that make one’s brain sharp and creative. The following are the 5 tactics that can make you more innovative every day.
1. Don’t discount your crazy ideas
When you were a little girl, you came up with many crazy ideas and believed you could turn them into reality. But as adults we are quick to eliminate our ideas as unrealistic, crazy and therefore impossible. However, we forget that these ‘crazy’ ideas are the ones that turn into the most successful innovations. Decades ago, a person who even suggested the idea of smart phones would have been deemed crazy and suitable for the mental asylum. 20 years down the line, this ‘crazy idea’ is the pillar of our lives. Unsuccessful innovators deem their ideas as crazy while successful innovators realize the potential of these crazy ideas and turn them to reality.
2. Be comfortable with fear
Every innovation comes at the price of fear and vulnerability. You look at your new idea and wonder if it will fail. You fear and feel vulnerable whenever questioned about it. Every innovator has felt this; it is a default part of innovation. The most important thing is to learn to be comfortable with fear and vulnerability. This does not mean suppressing your feelings but rather allowing these feelings and taking comfort in their positivity not their negativity. Do not let fear dictate your decision-making skills because any decision made out of fear is a wrong decision. As an innovator, you will be afraid but do not let fear drag you down.
3. Learn about anything and everything
think you know it all. When we spend a lot of time working towards a
certain expertise, we tend to think that we know more about the field. However,
to come up with innovative ideas one should look and think as a beginner. This
will enable you to view your field from different perspective hence understand
it more while spotting areas needing change. Do not look at your product/service
from an inventor’s perspective; look at it from a consumer’s perspective by
talking to first-time customers or even try using your own products. As Steve Jobs once said, “Creativity
is connecting things”. Making
connections results from expanding our knowledge horizons. This is why highly
successful entrepreneurs are the biggest learners; they spend most of their
free time reading and listening on topics not limited to their fields.
